What a claim to fame, huh? Fox News reports that Chavez has given kudos to Penn for his opposition to the war in Iraq.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has praised Sean Penn for his critical stance against the war in Iraq, saying the two chatted by phone and soon plan to meet in person.
Chavez said Penn traveled to Venezuela this week wanting to learn more about the situation in the country and walked around some of Caracas‘ poor barrios on his own.
“Welcome to Venezuela, Mr. Penn. What drives him is consciousness, the search for new paths,” Chavez said Wednesday in a televised speech. “He’s one of the greatest opponents of the Iraq invasion.”
Chavez read aloud from a recent open letter by Penn to President Bush in which the actor condemned the Iraq war and called for Bush to be impeached, saying the president along with Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice are “villainously and criminally obscene people.” more…
Noel Sheppard at NewsBusters asks, “Is it the pinnacle of an anti-American, socialist actor’s career to be praised by an anti-American, socialist dictator?” Well, Noel, why else would he be going to hang out with Hugo and his associates in Venezuela?
There are even many commentors at HuffiPo that aren’t too happy with the socialist actor.
As a side note, I do not agree with the photo that Pat Dollard has posted regarding Chavez and Penn.
That is just tasteless and offensive by any stretch of the imagination. We should never use a photo of disabled people as a derogatory illustration of someone with whom we disagree.
Hollyweird’s snuggling up to Chavez has been quite lucrative for them, as the Sydney Morning Herald notes.
Chavez also recently welcomed US actor Danny Glover to Venezuela and gave him 18 million dollars to finance a film on Haitian independence leader Toussaint Louverture.
